If you're going to play online though, you'll without question want a database program at the very minimum.

Three of the top online hold'em poker database applications are Hold’em Manager, Online Hold'em Poker Tracker, and Online Hold'em Poker Office. There are also some newer free ones that are available if you google around. All of them have free trials, so I'd advise giving them each a try and seeing which one makes more sense for you. If you're playing online though, and not using one that can support a HUD (heads up display w/ online hold'em poker stats), then you'll be a big disadvantage. Most of the regulars you're playing against are going to have one.
