This Lowball variation is played with a 53-card deck that includes the bug (joker). The power of the bug is similar to that of California Draw Texas Hold'em Poker with the Bug (page 106) except that it is more advantageous to hold the bug in Lowball Ace to Five, as it can be used as a wild card to represent any card the holder desires, whereas in California Draw it can only be used as an ace or part of a straight flush, straight or flush.

Some Lowball clubs have instituted what is known as the Sevens Rule. This means that after the draw, if a player checks with a seven high or better, he forfeits any further profits from the pot. He may still win the pot of course, but if another player bets and the player with the seven high calls and wins the pot, the player who made the bet is entitled to remove it from the pot.
