As they all sat down to a small wooden kitchen table, an outside observer would have seen eight men, all under 45 years old. All white, half were Jewish, half were immigrants, all were driven individuals searching for the highest success in their fields. This was the greatest accumulation of scientists ever assembled for one project. They started to play a game of poker, while they waited.

He also was not under General Groves army command, being actively involved in developing radar for the airforce, only coming to Los Alamos when needed. He easily ignored the General’s grumbling and started a game of Five-Card draw with a 25-cent ante. It was a very quick first hand with General Groves winning, betting aggressively, and stealing the pot.
