For example, if there is $200 in the pot and a holdem player bets $50, a holdem player contemplating a call will be risking $50 in order to win $250. The $200 already in the pot plus the $50 bet. In this case, the pot odds are 5 to 1. The holdem player can win 5 times as much as he risks, by making the call.
Here is another example: There is $125 in the pot. one holdem player bets $25, another holdem player calls the $25 and the action is now on you. What are the pot odds? If you came up with 7 to 1, you are correct. The calculations are done as follows: $125 + $25 + $25 = $175.
