In a game of this type where the compulsory antes in the pot at any one time vary according to the number of passed hands, most players feel justified in playing with a trash hand. However, the better player, who usually wins more often than he loses, is more cautious about opening the pot unless he believes he has a good chance of winning it.
With progressive antes, these general strategy rules apply: 1. In a five-handed game, the player should play with a pair of jacks or better regardless of the opening requirement. 2. In a six-handed game, the player should play with a pair of queens or better regardless of the opening requirement. 3. In a seven-handed game, the player should play with a pair of kings or better regardless of the opening requirement.
