The most memorable Five Card Stud Texas Hold'em Poker game in history started there at 11 P.M. on January 8, 1928, and continued until mid-afternoon on January 9, when most of the players had reached the end of physical endurance and the game ended. It was a $100- and $200-limit game, but the big-money bets were placed on high spades. Eight players participated in the game. They included Arnold Rothstein, George McManus, Meyer and Sam Boston, Martin Bowe, and three West Coast gamblers who were playing in the game for the first time —Joe Bernstein, "Nigger" Nate Raymond and Alvin C. Thompson, alias Titanic Thompson.
At the end of the game, Rothstein, the big loser, offered to cut Raymond high card for $40,000. Raymond accepted and cut first. He cut a king, Rothstein a ten. Raymond won the $40,000 bet, the biggest single wager on a high-card cut in history.
