During one of my many visits to the Sands Hotel Casino in the late

During one of my many visits to the Sands Hotel Casino in the late fifties, Aaron Weisberg, a Sands casino executive, introduced me to Joe Bernstein, the same Joe Bernstein who had taken part in Meehan's Texas Hold'em Poker game back in 1928. I asked Bernstein if he would agree to my interviewing him with regard to gambling in Las Vegas. The following morning found Bernstein in my Sands Hotel suite being interviewed by me. Toward the end of the interview, with tongue in cheek, I asked Bernstein if the Rothstein card game was crooked and what part he played in it. He smiled and said, "You don't expect me to answer that question, do you?"

"Yes, if you care to," I replied.

"Yes, if you care to," I replied. "Scarne, I won't answer that question, but I'll tell you what happened the night Rothstein was shot. As you already know, McManus had brought Titanic Thompson, Nigger Nate Raymond and me to Meehan's game that night. So, when we heard Rothstein wasn't going to honor his $319,000 in markers, Nigger Nate told McManus he was responsible for the marker collection. When Rothstein told McManus he wasn't going to honor the markers because he said he was cheated, McManus became worried and he began to drink. He drank a lot. He telephoned Lindy's that fatal night and asked Rothstein to meet him at the Park Central Hotel, where he had rented a suite. When Rothstein arrived, McManus was drunk, and he had a gun which I guess he hoped would frighten Rothstein into paying off at least part of the markers. He pointed the gun at Rothstein, who was sitting down. Rothstein pushed the gun away and accidentally it went off. McManus panicked and threw the gun out the window and ran from the room, forgetting that his overcoat was left in the room. It was an accident, no doubt about it, but it screwed me out of seventy grand."
