Practice Matters

69. Five Card Stud—Joker Wild

69. Five Card Stud—Joker Wild Played the same as Five Card Stud except that the joker as a wild card is added to the standard 52-card deck. A player may count the joker as any card he wishes. Should a player hold four of a kind and the joker, he has five of a kind, which beats a royal flush. The reason for playing with a joker is to loosen the game and increase the action. In Draw Texas Hold'em Poker it seems to work that way, but in Five Card Stud, strangely enough, the added joker decreases the action because if the joker appears as an upcard in a player's hand, opponents who do not hold a good hand immediately drop out. Furthermore, any player who raises is usually suspected of having the joker in the hole.

70. Five Card Stud—Last Card Down

70. Five Card Stud—Last Card Down A fascinating variation of Five Card Stud. This game is very popular in my neck of the woods, northern New Jersey. This variation is played the same as Five Card Stud except that the last card (fifth) is dealt face down giving each active player two hole cards and three upcards.
