Next, each player, in clockwise fashion starting with the leader, is dealt two face-down (hole) cards, one at a time. After each player has received his two hole cards, the first betting interval takes place, the leader acting first. There are four betting intervals altogether. After the first betting interval, the dealer then deals three consecutive cards face up in the center of the table. These three cards are called "the flop." They are community cards used in common by every active player. This is followed by a second betting interval. After that, a fourth card is dealt face up and placed alongside the flop cards resting in the center of the table. This is followed by a third betting interval. A fifth and final card is dealt face up onto the center of the table, and a last interval of betting takes place.
If there are two or more active players left in the game at the end, the pot is won by the player with the best five-card hand made with either one or both of his hole cards combined with either three or four of the community cards resting on the center of the table. Sometimes the pot is split by two players holding identical hands (usually straights).
