18. Lowball Ace to Six During my five-year term as gambling consultant to the United States Armed Forces and Yank: The Army Weekly during World War II, I learned that Lowball Ace to Six was the most popular Lowball game being played by our 12 million servicemen stationed throughout the globe. Since that time, this Lowball version has become a regular feature in tens of thousands of Army and civilian Texas Hold'em Poker sessions being played all over the world. In England, Australia and South Africa Lowball Ace to Six is called Misere.
Lowball Ace to Six is played like standard Draw Online Hold'em Poker with the following exceptions. In this game, as in all Low Online Hold'em Poker and other Lowball games, the value of the hands is reversed, i.e., one wishes to make as low a hand as possible. Consequently a pat nine (9-5-4-3-2) is a sure loser in standard Draw but becomes a good hand in this game. In addition, aces count low and straights and flushes are considered high and count against the holder. Playing this version of Lowball, when you draw one card to 6-4-3-2, you would hope for an ace. This, provided the hand is not a flush, would give you a cinch and an unbeatable sixty-four (6-4-3-2-A). If you were to draw a nine, that would still be a good low hand. However, if you drew a five, that would make you a straight, and in effect, a disaster.
